Really, all university advanced degrees can be divided into two spheres: sciences and arts. Science deals with the empirical investigation of nature to find out the truth, while art deals with evoking emotions through communication. We are all artists; very few of us, including myself at this point, are scientists. The only exception to this I see is an advanced degree in law or medicine, but these are basically trades or careers rather than academic disciplines. So why do people go to grad school to get worthless advanced degrees (otherwise known as graduate degrees) in literature, religion, philosophy, or art? And why do people think that a non-science advanced degree means anything, when most of the great writers, philosophers, and artists in history have either held no advanced degree or done the exact opposite of what they were taught at a university? Scientific knowledge requires training because science deals with practical matters; anyone could teach a course in, say, religion, if they read the textbook and studied up a bit! But I went to a literature grad school for a few weeks before I quit, and I guarantee you that none of the students in those graduate literature courses would have been able to teach even the most basic science course. Really, if you haven't learned how to study something like philosophy or painting on your own before you receive a college bachelor's degree, you didn't deserve to graduate. And most of the "art" created by people who hold non-science advanced degrees is terrible. [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by MindSlave |

I guess gkiss'd answer better to this, but a lot of ppl get degrees from literature, religion, philosophy, or art to teach those things. & isn't "being a teacher" makes you a sort of "scientist" for trying to spread smart things into ppl's brains? & even if you're not a scientist, if you study philosophy for example, it can change your point of wiev upon life on such a positive way that it can make our world a better place, b/c IMO many of the bad things happening in our lives are caused by not bad, but depressed ppl, with a negative way of thinking. I don't think art degrees are worthless. posted by a |

MindSlave: All Non-Science Advanced Degrees are Worthless Woah. *moment of silence* I agree! I would say that additionally, many people who go to school for a degree in the arts end up doing nothing related to their degree. A degree is an investment, and that's a waste of an investment. MindSlave: The only exception to this I see is an advanced degree in law or medicine, but these are basically trades or careers rather than academic disciplines. Do you include business/finance/accounting/etc in this? posted by Tiefling |

Yeah, intellectual advancement is a waste of time. We shouldn't bother to do philosophy where we question the foundations of science, the concept of music, the faith of religion or the ethics of businesses. What am I doing with my life? Hey someone spends an entire portion of their life writing prose or poetry, so the last thing they would want is people taking their work and studying their acheviements. What kind of idiots would do that? Socrates took a society which believed they had all the answers and proved that they didn't know anything like as much as they thought. So what did that society do? They executed him. Would that be your reaction to a modern-day Socrates, Mindslave? After all if it's not science, it must be worthless! posted by fatpie42 |

i do agree with you guys, because honestly sometimes when i talk to people who are majoring in philosophy or like...religion i think the same thing, wtf are you going to do after we graduate? work an office job for the rest of your life? the only response i get is that they want to get their PhD and become professors...which, seems sort of far fetched especially when were all 22-23 years old. but i mean i can say the same thing about myself since im majoring in anthropology and psychology. im finding anth to be a lot more my thing then psyc but then im in education too! so i thought about it and yeah i would totally come back and get my masters in both ed and anth because with ed i would get more money as a teacher but more than that i could be better at what i do with that added knowledge and experience. with anth, i could get funding and go do fieldwork somewhere in the world and write up an ethnography to publish. those things i would totally do because its all about knowledge right? and i have learned SO MUCH MORE after university than i have in highschool and just like a said, it gives you a whole new look on life, it makes you think extra critically about the world etc etc. i don't know im thankful that i get a chance to get these degrees but i also know that when i graduate i will have a career as a teacher so...i guess im biased. but at the same time its really up to you to make that decision if youre going to major in one of those arts, you have to stick to what youre interested in, become an author, a prof, travel the world and share your ideas etc etc. it seems worthless now yeah but at the same time i think its definitely a good thing to have in the long run.. i just read my post and it doesnt address anything, nor does it have a point... posted by gkiss |

fatpie42: Hey someone spends an entire portion of their life writing prose or poetry, so the last thing they would want is people taking their work and studying their acheviements. What kind of idiots would do that? People can study the achievements of poets or other authors all they want by buying books on Amazon or whatever bookstore they choose, or checking them out of their local public library. These people are known as the "reading public," which was the intended audience of anyone who ever wrote any creative literature worth a damn (please note that this does not include academicians who write for no other sector of the reading public than other academicians.) fatpie42: Socrates took a society which believed they had all the answers and proved that they didn't know anything like as much as they thought. So what did that society do? They executed him. Would that be your reaction to a modern-day Socrates, Mindslave? Dude that is just a hyperbolic over-reaction to my post, nothing more. LOL, as if I want to kill Socrates, whatever. I will tell you this: if Socrates were in al Qaeda, I would gladly kill him if given the chance as an enemy of my country. Beyond that, I'm fine with Socrates if he comes back. fatpie42: After all if it's not science, it must be worthless! No, no fatpie42, it's okay, if it's not science, it can still be worth a great deal... if someone's buying it!
