All right, so I just wanted to start this topic to brag about the fact that I used to go to football games when I was a kid to watch everybody's favorite cocky bastard, Deion Sanders, return punts and intercept passes for Florida State University from 1985-1988, when I was nine to 11 years old. Deion was the biggest thing to hit this town until the 2000 presidential election, when Tallahassee became ground zero for the battle over the recount. This was the very same recount that was ultimately halted by the US Supreme Court, tipping the election in favor of a goofy guy from Texas by the name of George W Bush, while his kid brother Jeb was resident in the Florida Governor's Mansion in Tallahassee. And, while a lot of people in this town claimed to think Deion was an obnoxious asshole when he was here, I think most of them would welcome with open arms his return to Tallahassee at this point just to escape the bad press we got over the Florida recount. And, as you should remember if you watch or read the news, there was lots of bad press about our county, even though the county went for Gore fair and square by more than 40,000 votes. To be honest, though, I don't remember much about Deion playing, just because I never liked football, though I do seem to remember some punt returns that were incredible just because he was so fast ! I know I went to the home games when he played, though, but maybe I am inventing memories here because I know that Deion was also a star for FSU's track team, training on the same FSU track where I used to train for my high school cross-country team. All I can say is, when the votes are counted, mine will be found to have been cast for Deion as coolest Tallahasseean ever, beating Governor Jeb Bush, former FSU student Jim Morrison, and actress Faye Dunaway by a hundred yard dash downfield with an intercepted pass. MindSlave: I do seem to remember some punt returns that were incredible just because he was so fast ! Yes, Deion was indeed extremely fast...possibly one of the fastest players to ever play in the NFL. In fact, I still think he holds the record for the 40-yard dash at the NFL Draft Combine at 4.16 seconds...In case your wondering, that's REALLY funking fast. posted by GP |
