»Clinton was a slicker criminal than Nixon«

Sharaith:
She had an affair with him and people found out, and they tried to get him impeached.

Two things: (1) They did more than just try to get Clinton impeached, he was impeached and tried before the Senate. (2) Clinton's impeachment actually had little to do with any extramarital affair; he was impeached on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, but he was acquitted.

I think the only difference between Clinton and another presidential disaster, Richard Nixon, who actually resigned to avoid impeachment, was that Clinton was a smarter and slicker criminal than Nixon was.

Presumably you aren't trying to say that Clinton was a criminal simply because he lied about his affair? After all if you had been cheating on your partner you wouldn't want to admit to it would you?

What other crimes do you think he committed? Or are you saying the fact that we never heard about any of them is a sign of just how slick he was?

Yes, Clinton is a criminal.
In his deposition for the Jones lawsuit, Clinton denied having "sexual relations" with Lewinsky. Based on the evidence provided by Tripp, Starr concluded that this sworn testimony was false and perjurious.

The issue was greatly confused by an unusual definition for sexual contact that was ordered during the initial questioning which led to the perjury allegations. [2] During the deposition, Clinton was asked "have you ever had sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky, as that term is defined in Deposition Exhibit 1, as modified by the Court." The judge ordered that Clinton be given an opportunity to review the agreed definition. Afterwards, Clinton answered "I have never had sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky." Clinton later stated that he interpreted the agreed upon definition of sexual relations to exclude his receiving oral sex

Yes, I would want to admit that.

See above.

So he wasn't a terribly bad criminal then was he? All he did was lie about an affair. It's perfectly rational not to wish to admit to having an affair after all...

Rational, yes, but still in my opinion a criminal, and the president of the United States should not be a criminal of any kind, ever. It's one thing to be a fairly decent president in many of your decisions as Clinton was, for which he should thank his advisors (notice I said "many," because Clinton did absolutely nothing towards defeating al Qaeda, even though he was apprised of the danger they posed, and in fact Clinton inflamed the situation by recklessly launching cruise missiles into Afghanistan and Sudan, a problem which continued into the Bush administration and led directly to 9/11/2001.) But it's another thing if a presidency is nearly destroyed by the president's own personal conduct, for which he has only himself to blame. The fact is, most of the citizens in any country are not going to care about a president's decisions unless the citizens themselves are immediately and visibly impacted by those decisions. What counts to most people is the positive qualities of leadership the president posesses, and the Lewinsky scandal destroyed most people's views of Clinton as being an effective leader. The president of the United States became, in effect, a dirty joke.

I think Clinton's more "guilty" in the cheating than Monica b/c he knew very well he's a married man, yet he still let his "groupie" to blow him. IMO famous ppl (i.e.: U.S. presidents) have a lot of maniac fans who want to have oral sex with 'em & if those famous ppl can't resist, the cheating is their own fault. In this sence if Clinton really cared about his family he'd have said no to Monica - but he didn't thus he = cheater - & the way he tried to save himself later with the lies - meaning oral sex isn't sex - is just too funny White laugh

He also smoked weed. Does that make him a criminal too? (I liked his response to that one too - "I didn't inhale", lol.)

If you think that most of the presidents wouldn't have lied if they were quizzed about an affair then I think you are quite naive.

You're right they'd have lied too, i was just trying to put the responsibility of cheating on Clinton's shoulders instead of Monica's.

You do know that Nixon was pardoned don't you? How can you even compare Nixon to Clintion when it comes to criminality? Lieing is one thing, but I think it matters what you are lieing to cover up. I.E. you lied to go to war (Bush) or you lied about tapping phones (Nixon) and breaking in to the democrats headquarters (Nixon). The sad part was Nixon was one of the most progressive Republicans in history, he just was more paranoid then a pothead on crack and felt compeled to "cheat".

You have to look at the context of the situation, I'm not gonna say Clinton was justified in his actions, but to say it was worse then Nixon is a bit off if you look at the two situations from a broader perspective and perhaps take a little more critical anyalisis, unless you are far far right wing and consider lieing and adultry itself to be a crime which the governemnt should punish people for.

Two things:

1. Clintons lie was about sex, but it was not to "protect" his wife from finding out. The reason Clinton lied was to protect HIS sorry butt in the Paula Jones Suit. That is not a "noble" thing to do, as so many of his apologists claim. It was perjury it it's rawest form.

2. Clinton was impeached and tried in the Senate, the ONLY reason he was acquitted was because of the sorry excuse for a party that was in control of the Senate at that time, not because he was innocent of the crime.
