Ok, I recently watched a doco on those virginity pledges that the American government is funding. I thought, WTF? Is this real? They are taught at these things that using protection during sex is bad because it fails and because of some special government condition, they can't endorse use of protection. And 88% of them break the pledge. Most of them DON'T use protection because, well, they've been told not to. And what happens? They get STDs or get pregnant. So much for safe sex... It's easy enough to take that vow, but how are they really, truly going to know that they can resist temptation? And the 12% that don't break the pledge? Good for you! Though I prefer the 'try before you buy' approach. I think this thing is scary. Everyone should have a choice. It should be an informed choice at that, knowing what the other options are, the risks and the benefits yadda yadda. posted by ravenfeather |

I think that most people would have understood that the concept is that abstinence is the best way to go since protection is not 100% effective, BUT if you can't help it, then use protection. I think maybe the pledgers purposely misinterpreted it to "don't use protection" in order to suit their own desires to have sex without protection. I suppose they were probably trying to pursuade themselves that "Well, since I've already broken the pledge, why not just go through with it breaking all the rules? I've already broken the main one, what's the point of keeping to the other ones?" ...And I don't get what the title of this thread has to do with content. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |
