I just saw this in the theater today... and I thought it was really good. The special effects were incredible, and I think the directors really caught the teenage spirit of Harry and his friends... But to imitate Kupov and his LATE wails of "AHHH Snape kills Dumbledore" ...AHHHHH, CEDRIC DIES! posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

Of course there were a few changes in the movie, but I thought overall it was pretty good. Even though Cho Chang is not that great of an actor... and Fleur Delacour was not that "magnificique"... but all the other kids were great! I especially liked Neville I was cracking up so hard when Ron said, "Bloody hell!" and they purposely zoomed in on the Beauxbaton girls' butts when they were walking... Kupov: You know what sucked about that movie, VOLDEMORT they screwed up VOLDEMORT. Hmm... what did you imagine Voldemort to look like? Because I read a lot of other reviews that said that Voldemort was awesome. I haven't read the fourth book for a while so I sort of forgot. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

The movie was probably the best Harry Potter movie yet. I'll tell you why they DIDN'T screw up Voldemort. It's because JK Rowling never uses any descriptive imagery so he can look however you want him to look. As for the dragon fight, I can't imagine anything more boring than having the whole thing set within the ring. They are wizards! They can find ways of seeing what is happening when it isn't right in front of them! posted by fatpie42 - not bothered |

I thought it was a good film, the book is better but could you really image them making the movie by the book it would be 7 hours long, so they changed things to keep it flowing posted by Deeindamatrix |

I'll tell you WHO they screwed up. DUMBLEDORE. It was awful. He's supposed to be a calm, firm, wise man... and instead he was shaking Harry wildly and practically choking him when he asked him, "Did you put your name in the goblet?" Stupid... posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

n/a, you probably should edit the title of your thread to mention that this thread contains spoilers. Lara and I went to see HP:GoF this weekend. Quite a few elements were missing/changed, and not necessarily in good ways. For example, throughout the movie Dumbledore does not resemble the character as depicted in the books. When the students from the two foreign schools arrive at Hogwarts, Dumbledore can be seen in the background cowering away from the Durmstrang pyrotechnics. Dumbledore, the only wizard who was not afraid of Voldemort, should not have been cowering from a few fireworks displays. And as n/a pointed out, Dumbledore reacts irrationally and nearly aggressively toward Harry, which is completely out of character for him. The escape of the dragon during Harry's first trial was clearly Hollywood-ized. Not only did this not happen in the book, but as Kupov said, there was no way Harry's performance could be graded if the trial did not occur in the makeshift stadium. Additionally, doesn't it seem that at least one wizard would be a bit concerned that an aggressive dragon was flying around Hogwarts, chasing after a student and destroying the roofing? However, when we cut back to the stadium, the wizards in the stadium don't seem particularly concerned about this turn of events. They just seem puzzled that the event is taking so long. The opening of the movie was very choppy. After the death of the Riddle house caretaker, the movie immediately throws us into the journey to the Quidditch World Cup Tournament, without any explanation of where the characters are going. Even more frustrating, the match itself is completely skipped! After taking the time to show Harry and the Weasleys set out on foot, reach the portkey, travel by means of the portkey to the camp grounds, set up their enchanted tent, and head over to the stadium, followed by a few breathtaking shots of the stadium itself, the movie cuts back to the Weasleys back in their tent. We never see a single shot of the tournament itself, and I don't believe we're ever told in the movie which team won. Then, after the Death Eaters riot, there is immediately another cut to the Hogwarts Express. In their efforts to capture the bulk of the book's introductory content, they managed to create a bunch of choppy and confusing opening scenes. Anyway, lots more thoughts on this that I might post later. For now, let me close with two plot holes from the book that are still not addressed in the movie: - During the first trial, Harry casts a spell to summon his broom from his room, in order to fly past the dragon and grab the Golden Egg. Why doesn't Harry simply summon the Golden Egg instead of his broom? The Golden Egg was a lot closer in proximity to him than his broom, and he also had line of sight on the Golden Egg. (The typical response from fans at this point is, "Well maybe the Golden Egg was enchanted to prevent it from being summoned." But if so, we're never told this by the author; not a single one of the four champions attempts this tactic during the first trial.) - The Triwizard Cup was a portkey. If the whole point of the tournament, from the point of view of Barty Crouch Jr, was to get Harry to touch the portkey that would teleport him to the graveyard in which Riddle was buried, then why didn't Barty turn any old object into a portkey that he knew Harry would be the first to touch? Barty's plan to get Harry to touch the portkey was to get Harry entered into the tournament, plant clues with Harry's friends on how to win, hope that Harry's friends would pass these clues to Harry, and eliminate any of the champions who posed a risk to Harry's chance at victory. If he had just turned a random object into a portkey, he simply would have had to arrange for Harry to touch it. posted by Tiefling |

Tiefling: n/a, you probably should edit the title of your thread to mention that this thread contains spoilers. Alright... but usually the people who haven't read Harry Potter by now will probably never read the series...and don't really care about them. And as a sidenote: I love it how you refer to me as "n/a". I don't know why, but I think it's awesome. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

I've never been a fan of the Harry Potter movies, and this one is no different, except maybe it's slightly better than the previous ones, perhaps because I feel it (= the book) had a relatively more interesting story. The only thing 'good' was the eye candy - the dragon fight, Barty Crouch Jr.. Mad-Eye Moody was interesting, but I guess due to time constraints they couldn't do much in developing his relationship with Harry. Rita Skeeter was, well, as expected, but they've missed out so many funny things with her - the 'bug' in Divination class and Hermione capturing her.. Voldemort could have been 'scarier'. Dumbledore is supposed to be 'larger than life' but they made him seem 'human' which is inexcusable. The Priori Incantem scene was supposed to be so much more poignant or something, but it was all too 'stiff' or something. But I guess this is what usually happens when you try to make a movie out of a book. I like the books because they have some interesting humour in them, but the movies aren't much, to me anyway. All in all, better than the previous ones, but that isn't saying much. [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by ryder |
