I have wondered what EMO is since I am asked often if am one. I am not. I don't really place myself into any group...but it seems that people like to have labels and enjoy branding people and classifying them...I guess so that they may keep things simple and organized in their own minds. It used to be "goth" that people would think I am...I have no idea why, but now it seems that the EMO label is more popular. It seems that the very popular goth-movement in youth has become old and outdated and the new "in" is EMO, it seems to be growing larger than the goth movement ever did. Why? Well, because back when the goth movement was big there was pretty much one store that opened up for that style...Hot Topic...and now there seems to be several different chains that cater to the EMO style. Anyway, I honestly don't really care what an EMO is, or what it involves at all. I just got curious one day and decided to try and find out and this is what I found... I asked some friends who seem to be "in the know"...ahem...and they thought it was great, describes EMO perfectly. I just think that it's a funny video. posted by allone |

Heh where's Pawnatron to answer? Emo as a style looks crap. Emo as a lifestyle (which seems to be in practice the majority of the time) involves horrible degrading, whining and pretending you're worse off than everyone else even if (in most cases) you live a comfortable middle or upper-middle class lifestyle at home. I've had bad experiences with Emos, the girls can be... well sluts. I've seen one emo go and cheat on 3 people in the length of 3 weeks whilst sleeping with about 5 people over that time. And then they funking complain how bad their life is now they've put themselves in such a bad situation, not giving a shit how bad they must've made the guys feel. So basically the stereotype is attention seeking and selfish well-off middeclassers, and it seems to fit most I meet like a glove, so I stay the hell away from them. And the poetry's fuckin awful, as is the music. So basically, stay the funk away from it. It's just pop-culture gone to the shitter in hell. posted by hungarian kid |

hungarian kid: Emo as a lifestyle (which seems to be in practice the majority of the time) involves horrible degrading, whining and pretending you're worse off than everyone else even if (in most cases) you live a comfortable middle or upper-middle class lifestyle at home. you know its funny, most of the people i know that complain about how they are soo unlucky and nothing can be worse in their lives are people that are better off than me. meh, but my life, sure i have had some bad things happen (who hasn't?) but come on, im not going to sit and complain about it, what will that do besides annoy all of my friends? also whenever i do start to think of how things seem to all be going wrong at whatever time it may happen, i stop and think about the homeless, or people who cannot afford to eat daily...and all the things that i am very fortunate to have. things will go wrong...its life, but when you constantly focus on all the negative things in your life, you might discover that things will stay bad and probably get worse. posted by allone |

allone: I have wondered what EMO is since I am asked often if am one. I am not. No offense allone, but your profile sais for example, "Occupation: loser" & isn't it possible that sometimes you state something like this as a joke, but ppl misunderstand you & they think you really see yourself as a "loser" & therefore they think you're EMOtional? Also, EMO has a positive side too: it helps ppl talk about their negative feelings, taking a weight off of their souls. Actually, i know 2 ppl who tried to commit suicide b/c they're so sad & there's simply nobody who wanted to listen to them. So why not write a song about it & just let all the pain come out? posted by a |

Actually, i know 2 ppl who tried to commit suicide b/c they're so sad & there's simply nobody who wanted to listen to them. So why not write a song about it & just let all the pain come out? Because you don't have to be EMO to do that. People have been writing songs that express their feelings and 'pain' for fuckin decades (centuries even) and some of those songs have been brilliant. But notice there was no EMO influence on these songs? And I'm saying EMO as a stereotype, not as an abbreviation for emotional. You don't have to be EMO to vent your problems, I deal with a lot of mine, but when I need to I sometimes vent to a close friend. Which is a lot different to walking around with gimmicky tshirts proclaiming how individual I am and how no one understands me. There's a difference between attention seeking mixed with pop culture and actually having problems. Every one deals with problems, some they can't deal with, but turning that into a fashion is just funking horrible. It's despicable. Especially when most of it is for the fashion. So basically... EMO doesn't have that effect a, it has a worse one that's based around selfishness and attention seeking. Ha I don't care if I'm generalising, it's a stereotype and fad based around stupidity. posted by hungarian kid |

(honestly the reason i put loser in that profile was because i had that song, loser, stuck in my head...by Beck) i do actually joke around a lot, in fact just last night i went to dinner with a friend, one of the friends i showed that video to, and we have been making fun of emos since...so at the table we were pretending to be emo...to the extreme...good times i think also, that a lot of it has to do with the way in which i dress...people pass judgement on you based totally on your looks...i never really called my style anything just...me...(im weird because most people here shop for clothing at one store, or at several stores that sell the same exact type of thing, such as abercrombie and fitch, then they turn around and go to american eagle...same crap, where as i will go to express, then turn around and go to hot topic, then go to armani exchange, then turn around and go to urban outfitters, meh) i don't really dress like anyone else here in this town and i have been described as a rocker, gq model, goth, pimp, emo, rich boy...i mean, i wore a black velvet suit with a bright blood red shirt and black tie this past weekend, then the next night i wore black flared jeans with a black silk turtleneck and a black suitcoat with white pinstripes and beatle boots... whatever...i don't really care, i wear what i want when i want how i want. posted by allone |

also i have to go with HK here... so if you are typically a happy person and something goes wrong in your life and you write about it or express it are you suddenly emo? bad things happen to everyone, that's life...people get sad all the time. but i couldnt bear to live a life wrapped up in sadness all the time. (isnt that goth?) and yes, i have had some very bad things happen in my life, but i found out...the more you focus on and keep thinking about all the negative in your life the more negative things seem to happen. i have more to say about this, but i will have to later...i have to go for now posted by allone |

allone: Ever wonder what EMO is? I can give it to you in one word: WEEZER ! They are like the kings of emo. I think the singer went to Harvard, too, so you guys may have a point about them being privileged people who like to whine. Plus Weezer are a horrible band, can't write or sing to save their lives, so that's a good argument against emo. I first heard the word "emo" used by my younger brother to describe a guy working in a record store who wore thick glasses, a spiky hairstyle, and a vintage shirt. So everytime I hear it, I think of that guy. I'm going to start the next emo, and it will be called "schizo!" So instead of pretending to be depressed like when they were emo, the trendy people will pretend to be totally paranoid and hearing voices in their heads. LOL, finally I'll be on the cutting edge of popular culture. posted by Julius Schizor |

i found a picture of a style that is very similar to how i dress most of the time...is this emo? it isnt in my opinion oh, i wear my glasses sometimes too, and they have black frames! that must mean something! (yeah, it means that i like the color black and it looks good on me) that must mean that im emo, how sad...i think ill write a poem about it how sad am i that i must hide from the truth no matter where i go it gets shoved in my face the dark emtyness that engulfs my existance is becoming too great a power that i must close my eyes on the final hour i thought that black was just a color not a symbol of my eternal void of happiness, i was wrong i must be this creature of dispair, this creature of lament because i have black spikey hair and my glasses resemble clark kents [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by allone |

I wouldn't say that you dress like an EMO...more like a Hipster. The Hipsters I used to hang out w/drank "blue-collar" beers like Pabst, Miller High Life, Grain Belt, etc. and listened to bands like The Strokes, The Hives, Kings of Leon, etc. Also, they don't complain near as much as EMOs do..."Oh, my life sucks even though I was raised in the suburbs, had a good education and have parents who care about me"...boo-fuckin-hoo. Seriously, those EMO morons are a pathetic. Maybe when you stop leeching off your parents and get out in the real world, you'll drop the "me-so-sorry" routine, get off you ass and get a job and do something more productive than whine about how life has "screwed" you. Like allone said earlier, every single one of us has gone through hard times...um, it's called life. posted by GP |
