Quote: BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United States handed over sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government on Monday, formally ending a 14-month occupation two days earlier than expected to try to forestall guerrilla attacks.
In a surprise ceremony that was finished before it was announced and before ordinary Iraqis were aware of it, Iraq (news - web sites)'s outgoing U.S. governor, Paul Bremer, gave a letter to Iraqi officials sealing the transfer of powers. Within hours, Bremer flew out of the country, a coalition source said. "This is a historic day, a happy day, a day that all Iraqis have been looking forward to," Iraqi President Ghazi Yawar said at the ceremony, which transferred sovereignty at 10:26 a.m. (0626 GMT). "This is the time when we take the country back into the international community." U.S. and British officials say the handover is a key step on the path to democracy in Iraq, but one of the government's first actions as a sovereign power is expected to be the imposition of emergency laws, including curfews, to crack down on guerrillas posted by The ONEder Man |

i think this is the beginning of the end for the iraqi troubles if the ousted sunni can be persuaded to help the new government carry out elections rather than seek to regain power then it may have a chance similarly the kurds and shi, ites must be willing to forgive the actions of the people who risked the same torture they did if they failed to comply but as i said on another thread old hatreds are hard to kill off posted by the anomaly |

knn: This is an interims Iraqi government and not a democratically elected one. A first good step. Indeed, it is a good first step. But you can't fault the U.S. for appointing Iraq's govt. The public is no shape mentally or physically yet to elect their own. Mind you, this is a country that hasn't had a non-corrupt leader since the time of Hammourabi.
