I was going to say that if someone tried to move an English football team they'd probable end up dead, but then I remembered it has happened. Wimbledon FC moved 70 miles north to become Milton Keynes Dons. It would seem the brains behind the move completely failed to understand what football (soccer) fans are all about. The locals in Milton Keynes still supported their lower league local teams, and the inhabitants of Wimbledon boycotted the new team and formed their own. In addition to this, opposing teams boycotted MK Dons games in sympathy with Wimbledon FC fans. They lost loads of cash. MK Dons have now been relegated twice in three seasons with no suggestion of improvement. Having a look around the net, one of the main reasons cited for American Football relocating is that they have no promotion or relegation. I didn't realise this till now. The only way for a new city to get a team is to nick one! This seems strange. posted by SamM |

Aussie rules doesn't have relegation/promotion either... South Melbourne did move to Sydney, but it wasn't a purchase. I guess it does provide some interest in the media if clubs are always under pressure of being for sale. In Aussie rules we have a "competative balance fund" which spreads the money from the larger clubs to the smaller ones so that the comp is more even. Plus the draft system and salary cap is weighted in favour of the smaller clubs so that they don't just disappear. Ineresting that there are no americans here defending their game. posted by Migueldo |
