Kupov: Anyone know any ways to really cut down on disc space without deleting any of my precus music or videos? I think you want to increase disk space not cut down on it (why would you want less space?) Anyway, it depends on what you have - sadly my crystal ball is in the shop With any version of windows keep your temporary directories clear, it's surprising how much junk gets left behind by programs not cleaning up after themselves properly. Check for and empty the following folders; C:\Temp C:\Windows\Temp C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temp Disk Cleanup (get properties on any Drive and there's a button) is supposed to clear these but it sometimes misses stuff. Reduce the amount of space your recycle bin takes, if you have more than one drive, set each seperately. The space reserved for the recycle bin is just that - Reserved, meaning you don't get to use it and it can make quite a difference on large drives. If you're using Windows XP you can save about 400 Meg on the C: drive by deleting the contents of the DLLCache if you haven't already. C:\Windows\System32\Dllcache Again with XP, you can reduce the amount of space RESERVED for system restore points - (Right Button / Properties / System Restore on your "My Computer"). This defaults to 12% of the TOTAL drive space, or 1.2 Gig out of every ten that you'll never get to use. posted by Marl64 |

Even if you manage to cut down on your disk usage, remember that running with a hard disk that is nearly full can harm your system performance. posted by Tiefling |

Kupov: So i would need a new drive? Either that or better management skills It's a well observed fact that the amount of data you "keep handy" will expand to fill the amount of space you have. If you are considering a new drive, go for an additional one rather than a replacement, running on multiple drives also increases performance if you balance the work between them. I'm sure it's been covered somewhere here already, but as an example, putting your swap file on a different physical disk to windows itself improves overall performance. posted by Marl64 |

Disks are so cheap. Why bother with deleting files. Simply buy a 300-500GB disk. posted by knn |
