 knn: One of the theories is of course that every daughter wants to murder her mother because her father makes her horny and the mother is in the way. This applies also to boys and fathers. Let me add an interesting fact here. Everybody knows that the own mother or the own father are the last persons to have sex with (unless you are not normal). Freud did have 2 mothers (one biological and the mother of his (half-)brothers with whom he lived). So this nonsense Oedipus theory may stem from his illegally generalized childhood. posted by knn |

Another bad thing about Freud is that he actually had no experience before he wrote his theories. He basically had a handful of patients. That's it.  posted by knn |

holy_of_holies: And Freud got involved with a guy named Fleiss (a coke-snorting buddy BTW) who believed that the nose was the answer to all unknown questions about the body and mind, and that mental and physical illness could be caused by imperfections on the inside of the nose. Yeah, sounds weird now. But it's not weirder than the medical theory of that time that mental illnesses of women are based in the uterus. posted by knn |

He called that particular idea the "Elektra Complex" after the Greek myth of Elektra and her mother Clytemnestra...it seems that Freud believed all Greek myths magically correspond to mental illnesses that he invented the cure to. I wonder what he would have thought of me; Freud would have had to come up with a whole new illness to describe me. "You are ze disease...und I am ze cure! If you giff me any more trouble, I vill name a disease after you!" The MindSlave Complex! You'll know you have it when you kill your psychoanalyst and draw pictures of Batman on the wall in his blood!
