»He says 'Murder' he says... I need help with the lyrics«

Hi, I have found a song by Toris Amos (actually it's an old song from the good old mafia times). Can anyone explain what the lyrics mean?
Finally found a fella
almost completely divine
but his vocabulary
is killing this romance of mine

We get into an intimate situation
and then begins this character's conversation

He says, murder, he says
every time we kiss
He says, murder, he says
at a time like this
He says, murder, he says
Is that the language of love?

He says, solid, he says
takes me in his arms
and says, solid, he says
meaning all my charms
He says, solid, he says
Is that the language of love?

He says, chick chick
you torture me
Zoom, are we livin?
I'm thinkin' of leaving him flat

He says, dig dig the jumps
the old ticker is giving
He can talk plainer than that

He says, murder, he says
every time I kiss
He says, murder, he says
keep it up like this
and that murder he says
in that impossible tone

will bring on nobody's murder
but his own

He says, Jackson, he says
and my name's Marie
He says, Jackson, he says
shoot the snoot for me
He says, Jackson, he says
Is that the language of love?

He says, mmhmm
when he likes my hat
He says, tsk tsk tsk
what the heck is that?
He says, woo hoo! he says
Is that the language of love?

He says hep hep with helium
now babe, we're cookin'
another expression's too ill
He says, we're in the groove
and the groove is good lookin'
Sounds like his uppers don't fit!

He says, murder, he says
every time we kiss
He says, murder, he says
keep it up like this
and that murder he says
in that impossible tone

will bring on nobody's murder
but his own

What does it mean when someone says
• murder
• solid
• chick chick, you torture me
• zoom, are we livin?
• dig dig the jumps
• the old ticker is giving
• Jackson
• shoot the snoot for me
• hep hep with helium
• now babe, we're cookin'
• we're in the groove and the groove is good lookin'

Help with Lyrics

"Murder" in this context is slang for "You're killing me!" as in "You're so beautiful, you kill me." It's a rather indelicate way of speaking such a sentiment.

"Solid" is, again, a rather non-romantic way of complimenting a woman's body during such a tender moment as a hug.

"The older ticker is giving" means "You're giving me a heart attack" - again, a slang metaphor, similar to "You take my breath away."

Oh, and there's a line you misquote: The phrase is "and other expressions to wit" meaning, "there are other expressions, for example, that bear witness to this guy's crude vocabulary."

The rest of the lyrics you question are similarly "slang" and too cool for the comfort for the insecurities of the song's singer.

The song was not written by Tori Amos. It was written by Jimmy McHugh (born in 1898) and used in a 1948 film by the same name.

"The older ticker is giving" means "You're giving me a heart attack" - again, a slang metaphor, similar to "You take my breath away."

"Jackson" is a strange way to refer to a woman, as it is commonly used in slang to refer to a man's privates, as in, "Dude, your jackson is showing!" In this song, it could be seen as an idiom, like "Baby!"

"Dig dig the jumps" means, "You like my moves" or "I like the way we move together"

Saying "hep hep with helium" refers to a guy who is trying (in this case, most unsuccessfully!) to impress a woman by talking funny after breathing in helium gas from a balloon. "Hep hep" could mean "Step to it!" but it was also the rallying crying of a German mob during an anti-Jewish riot in the early 1800s. One theory is that "HEP" is an acronym from the Latin "Hierosolyma est perdita" ("Jerusalem is lost"), a rallying cry of the medieval Crusaders. A more likely source for the rallying cry is the traditional herding phrase of German sheep herders.

Check out this hilarious performance of "Murder, He Says" by Betty Hutton in 1948:
