I've always had speculation about award shows. The Grammy's, Oscars, especially shows like MTV's VMA's and Movie Awards. My theory goes something like this; award shows are a huge money machine. Basically, the actor, director, or in MTV's VMA's case, the band "buys" the award. The votes don't really count, that is just more ways for the promoters of these events to make money. The votes do not matter. What matters is how much the firm (actors, bands, directors, etc.) is willing to pay for the award. Why? For instance, movies that get labeled "Grammy Winner" and albumsand artists/bands that win these types of awards get more exposure. For example, someoine is walking in the video store. They don't know what movie to get. Oh, I've heard a lot about this movie, it won an MTV Award/or Oscar/Grammy. I'll rent/but it. Is what one may think. So the promoters of events benifit from the pay of the winners of the award (they buy the award from them), and the artist/actor etc. pays for the award. In return they get more exposure. I mean why would these shows be honest and truthful, honestly? I've seen some shows where someone wins out of nowhere. For example, one year at the VMA's the band Mudvayne won an award. Many were shocked. It seemed the majority would have voted for someone else. Mudvayne wasn't even popular, and the song wasn't that good, especially by mainstream standards. It is because the votes did not count, it was the money that the label paid MTV to award Mudvayne with this prestigious award. Just a theory. posted by The Shadow of Agent 488 |

I was always sure those award shows had ridiculous results just because of the small amount of people that decided on it, like 100 people in a room. And it'd obviously subjective with such a small amount of people deciding, I just avoid award shows like a disease. posted by hungarian kid |

I read something about this on a blog of a guy who had been a personal assistant to a guy who was a major Hollywood player and member of the academy that votes for the Oscars. He said in all honesty that Hollywood personal assistants are some of the most powerful people in the industry when it comes to the Oscars, because it is very common for the academy member to procrastinate on filling out his/her ballot for the Oscars, and he/she will just give it to his/her personal assistant to do. The guy whose blog I read is now a very minor Hollywood figure (mostly famous for dating Audrey Tautou,) yet he said he had voted for the Oscars on numerous occasions as a personal assistant. So really not only do just a few people decide who gets the award, many times those few people don't care enough to actually cast their votes! I'm sure this happens in the Grammys too. Ah, blogs are a wonderful thing. posted by MindSlavery Florida |

Above all else I am referring more towards award shows where "the people" vote via internet or phone. posted by The Shadow of Agent 488 |
