The Iraqi interims government starts to rule brutally: "Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.. says he'll announce emergency measures... Iraqi security forces, with U.S. support, have already begun raiding hideouts of insurgents and criminals." US military had surrounded several areas. Iraqi police, elite troops, and the Iraqi secret agency raided systematically several appartments and dragged nearly 150 suspects out, who were started to be beaten immediately. "As arrests were made, men were dragged from their homes disheveled and screaming. Kamal and his commanders moved fast through the area, going from target to target as a combination of Iraqi police, the paramilitary-style SWAT team and plainclothes intelligence officers swarmed through the area. Gunshots periodically rang out in the surrounding blocks, but the massive show of force confined resistance to a few incidents." Hussein Ali Kamal, the chief of the operation, "and his commanders ordered men into selected addresses and businesses. Names were checked on lists, but many of those arrested were implicated only by having been in one of the known criminal locations" "As the arrestees were piled into cars, trucks, vans and buses, they received humiliating slaps, kicks and occasionally significant beatings. This display of power by the police was as much about showing the local residents that the new Iraqi authorities are serious about punishment as it was about taking known criminals off the streets." "Inside the compound, the arrestees were roughly dragged from the vehicles and forced to run a gauntlet of screaming police officers, who slapped, kicked and whipped them until they formed a human puddle on the ground in front of the building. Most of the detained wisely went limp and passive on the ground. Those who resisted or attempted to protest received harsh beatings, and blood streamed from the faces of those who failed to fall into line." posted by knn |

if they are targeting the right people...namely the people carrying out the bomb attacks on iraqi civilians then i have no problem with these actions if they simply begin victimising people who had no choice but to "support" the previous regime under fear of death then this is not the right action to be taking i guess time will tell posted by the anomaly |

This account doesn't look to me as if they were targeting "the right people". They seem to be in a hurry to show their power - which might mean that they are not that sure they have it. Any way, in such big affairs as a rule small people suffer. posted by mymla |

is that knn didn't post the bit about treating the old mann who was implicated gently and with respect nor did it mention that the area and houses raided were all preselected as known criminal and insurgent houses nor did it mention that there was 2 months of insider intelligence into the criminals that were targeted nor did it mention this particular wuote "despite the level of corporal punishment the police were not cruel" you know something knn...you really should be michael moore...employing the tactics of selecting information that is true so that it leads to an impression that is exagerrated and distorted posted by the anomaly |

... is worthless. Should I mention that the police did NOT beat an old man up? Are you serious? Should I mention that the raid was PLANNED? These are obvious things. Imagine a post: "FBI raids a house. They planned it." Very funny. Also I DID mention "have already begun raiding hideouts of insurgents and criminals." Moreover the reports are pretty long, that's why I put a link to them so anybody can read the whole story. I have nothing to obscure. posted by knn |

if someone read only your post they would like it was unorchastrated violence against all the people arrested but the link shows other wise your topic title and post would suggest that everyone was brutalised but the link shows that was not the case and goes as far to say that they were not cruel in their actions...and that is the viewpoint of journalists who were arrested at the scene posted by the anomaly |
