I went to the BBC health section and found the leading article to be Alcohol may protect women's bones and another underneath it, also saying that alcohol is good for one's health. A sherry could keep doctor away I find it strange how hard alcohol is promoted. Yes it is probably true that "sherry reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol". But I bet there are other things except sherry that do it even better. They even say beer is extremely good for you. Maybe they write about sherry reducing cholesterol level because it's so nice - you never expected _this_ to protect your health... let's start drinking sherry! Because wrting about non-alcohol food that helps you reduce cholesterol will be booooring. OK, it might be that there is some (questionable) good in alcohol - but I think that there is so much more BAD to it that try and use it to protect your health risking harming it more makes no sense (not to mention other consequences). Or? posted by mymla |

Anyone heard that phrase? It's true. It's been proven that a glass of wine a day will lengthen your life. Alcohol is only bad in large doses (which are far more enjoyable). While there may be other things which can improve health, it is unlikely that they do it in the same way that alcohol does. posted by fatpie42 |

Quote: It's been proven that a glass of wine a day will lengthen your life. Alcohol is only bad in large doses (which are far more enjoyable). 1) A glass of grape juice will do the same 2) No, not only in large amounts. Even in small amounts. In large amounts for liver, in small amounts for your unborn baby and your mental health. 3) The researchers usually only research 1 aspect (= the healthy vitamins in wine, believe it or not). Other aspects are not researched. A typical manko of modern studies. I even heard in a alcohol discussion TV show: 3 glasses of wine every day. Those scientists are nuts, really. 3 glasses a day is already addiction. posted by knn |

Quote: Alcohol is only bad in large doses What do you consider a large dose? Is a bottle of beer a large dose? Hardly. But a bottle a beer every day is an addiction already, if you start to want it and feel your evening isn't complete without it. For all I know, real addiction also starts with small doses. In the Soviet army there was a tradition after the WWII to give to the soldiers some small dose, like 50 gramms of vodka, every day. That is not a lot, don't you agree? That made half the male population alcoholics. Quote: unlikely that they do it in the same way that alcohol does. Yes sure, they don't give you the wonderful feeling alcohol creates in your mind. People get more and more addicted to alcohol to relax, to create the (fake, just get sober!) feeling of being close to people. Alcohol brings down some bariers (shyness for example), but it brings down your level of control over yourself. Even in small doses. When you don't drink at all even a glass of wine might be enough to make you very drunk. They want to justify alcohol by any means - good for health is one of them. Most people would eat and drink anything for their health. And it makes you feel less guilty if you drink a glass (or two, but very seldom three) of wine every day - why, you are doing it for health reasons! They get people addicted with such things, and keep their profits or even enlarge them. posted by mymla |

A glass of wine a day is not enough to affect your mental health. It will only affect your baby if you are pregnant - and we already know that alcohol is a bad thing to have when you are pregnant. In the other thread there were people talking about weed and even LSD quite liberally. On this thread I am being told off for suggesting that one glass of wine a day might be healthy - even when we are discussing scientific studies which agree with me! posted by fatpie42 |

Quote: A glass of wine a day is not enough to affect your mental health You wish. You really can see it in the eyes if someone has been a regular mini-drinker his whole life, e.g. 1 bottle of beer before bed. Quote: even when we are discussing scientific studies which agree with me! Wine IS healthy. But it is also unhealthy. Thus if a study only researches 1 aspect (as most do) it's worthless. Example (this really happened): "Medicament X can reduce the risk of death by stroke by 50%" Well, that's true, the study is correct. So what is wrong? The question asked is wrong (= statistical trick). "Death by stroke" is irrelevant. "Death" is relevant, or "Quality of living". It turned out that the people weren't dying less. Just not by stroke. posted by knn |

Quote: On this thread I am being told off for suggesting that one glass of wine a day might be healthy I started this thread, so it’s basically my opinion about alcohol. You can safely keep yours, no one is really telling you off. As you might have noticed, in that ever-tried-any-drugs thread I wasn’t very active, exactly for this very reason that I deeply disapprove of drugs of any kind, and that particular thread turned into a pro-drug one. So I had to start another I used to like alcohol a lot, honestly. One of the things that made me stop was that 1) it is addictive. However healthy one glass of wine is, how many people won’t have another one after they are finished with their healthy doze? I was for a couple of months on my one-beer-a-day trip not caring about it when I realized that I am addicted already. 2) I once thought what is there good in driking? Except being like everyone else? It turned out that there was not one single good thing that happened to me when I was drunk, whereas there were dozens of things I wish did not happen. Things I wouldn’t have done if I were sober and things I was ashamed of afterwards. Plus the hangovers, pretty bad sometimes... OK I guess I don’t have a right to say anything yet, because my drinking history is still a few years longer than non-drinking one, but one thing I can say for sure: only after staying sober for a few months I realised how much even small doses of alcohol obscured my mind. posted by mymla |

I have tried both alcohol and cannibis. I know that alcohol is more harmful, but I prefer it. The reason for this is because cannibis makes me paranoid. If a drug produces bad effects in you then you shouldn't take it. But, as a very shy, timid person, alcohol is very helpful for relaxing me and allowing me to talk more socially. I'm sorry that you have come to know the problems with alcohol abuse. But you must realise that there is a level of consumption of alcohol for many people which is not abuse and has few, if any, harmful effects. Not everyone turns into an ogre and loses all self control after one glass of wine. For those people, a glass of wine a day would be a healthy part of their diet. posted by fatpie42 |

Right on, Fatpie. Both alcohol and drugs addiction are terrible things. Then again, so is nicotine and food addiction. It all comes down to the individual. While I too have experience the ills of drugs and alcohol, I've also had some of the most fun times of my life w/both. In my opinion, there is nothing better than having a few drinks w/your boys and laughing until you go to sleep. Sure, it's bad for this and that, blah, blah, blah. But I'd rather give up years at the end of my life to have some great memories now that will last forever. As long as you use it moderation alcohol can be great. You feel more relaxed and can talk to anyone about anything when you've had a skin full. I think the problem comes if you 'have' to use it to feel you can meet/talk to people rather than use some charm and wit and take a risk. If you think you cant do that without getting a bit tanked before hand then i'd say that it's got a hold on you and that's very dangerous. posted by Crossfade |

I like a drink as much as the next person, at one time many moons ago I began to like it too much. I realised this and learned to know my limits. I can go out and have a good time without getting absolutely pissed... I do get blotto from time to time but that's all it is...the very odd occasion. I can go to the pub have a couple and then leave...NO problem posted by Another Smith |
