»Many died on the cross. Why was Jesus special?«

This is a serious question:

Many have died. What the heck was so special about Jesus' crucification? Why would that wash sins away?

Because Jesus was God and without sin

Because Jesus was God. Death was the punishment for sin and God has no sin. By taking man's punishment for sin on himself Christ allows salvation through faith in Him rather than through the law.

Jesus could have just as easily have been hit by a bus and there would have been the same effect. However the death is significant since being nailed up on a tree is supposed to be a particularly demeaning death in the old testament and it was prophesised that this death would be dealt to the messiah.
