In forums where threads are listed newest first (like yours  ) threads that are not updated work their way down the page, as threads with newer updates move in above them. Eventually they drop off the first page out of sight.
People tend to read posts from the top down, so the idea of bumping threads is to keep (what people feel are) important topics near the top - in the spotlight so to speak. The down side is when you're watching a thread for updates and people keep bumping it without actually adding anything, you have a wasted trip. Then you get those who bump their own threads for their own Ego. Nothing new is being added, but they want people to look at what they once wrote. Allow me to demonstrate

A few corrections if I may? About manga...there are comics published for everyone from the very young and just learning how to read all the way up to the elderly in Japan. How do I know? I'm living there and regularly browse the bookstores. Saying that only American comics are for adults is ridiculous. Mostly manga aimed at the 12-18 crowd are translated, but that's where the U.S. market is now. That wasn't Lanzer. Lanzer can spell and would have said something more intelligent than to just plug his own site. The majority of Gaia users want gold to decorate their avatar with and don't have anything to really contribute. If those types would stay in the Chatterbox forum, where just gibberish and bumping are allowed, it'd be different, but there are always the people who disregard the rules and go into the computer and technology forum and ask "ok how meny of u guyz and gurlz liek inuyasha ?". Those sorts of people get a hefty flame now and then and the mods pitch their thread back into the right forum. If you don't like Gaia, just stay off of it. It's not such a hard concept. I abhor some parts of it *ahemchatteboxandanimediscussionsahem* but I hang around in the art requests and commissions forum and make my gold through selling art, not mindless bumping and annoying the users that actually do have brain cells that haven't died yet from lack of use. Funny...for all the complaining that Gaia is obviously for mindless little kids because of the icons...I do notice a good number of icons at the end of the icon list for this place that are exactly the same. I might suggest thinking a little harder before you hit your own self with a blanket statement as well as your intended targets. posted by Moppy |

I keep a deviantART gallery at  I forgot to add, though. Not all Gaia users are in the 10-14 range. I'm 20, one of my friends that also posts is 21, and most of my friends on Gaia are 18-20 (I think one is 23). It's harder to find the people with higher intellect or age or both, but they do exist with a little sifting through the stereotypical n00bs. posted by Moppy |

I'm happy with the few memberships I have now, really. Sorry to disappoint. I'm pretty busy and can only keep up with a few websites, and Ragnarok Online in my spare time (what little I have anyway) so I really can't go plunking down accounts everywhere.
