Eh? I mean it's a lot of trouble to set up the "hangout" thing to mostly just type messages that appear on the screen beside your avatar[at the top of every screen] when you can just go to the mail section, send a PM, and then you get a notification and read it. It's handier, and it doesn't make the server die. posted by bluewolf |

Eh, I also find it amusing that instead of working on already existing problems, they continue adding new even buggier things to it. Is that how a forum is supposed to be handled? Also, reguarding the intelligence level... I'd say most of the population on there has the intelligence of a 8 year old on Counter Strike. Namely, yelling "u r a noob" "hahaha u r stoopid" and such. Also, I realized my last post was missing something... Ah yes, closure to the "I would have left Gaia." bit. To finish that up it should be "I would have left Gaia, if were not for a RP that's rather important to me. I'm staying in it for a friend who is going to translate it into a book.Still, I'm thinking of asking him to move it to his own forum... Gaia is getting more and more buggy with every passing minute it seems. Yes those who scream its perfect! It does have bugs! And a damned lot of them! Trading is screwed, and malfunctions every so often when its over-loaded, thus making you lose all your items for you pixilated friend...( I think they recently got to that issue.) The subscribed list that is supposed to help you keep track of threads is down, thus defeating its purpose. The search feature for a thread is down, thus voiding almost any chance of finding an old thread you want. The avatars have bugs that have yet to be worked out in most cases. The mods will get to your complaints... Eventually. (Sometimes not at all.) And for all its screaming of being PG-13, it has several hentai related things on it, and gay pictures posted everywhere. Hell, there is even a guild on there talking about "their first time" "did it hurt?" and "I'm a transy!". Yes... PG-13. posted by Viral |

nocturnal_anonymous: Man, those posts that you cited drove me nuts. It's so hard to understand...
And the bumps! What the hell are those? Bump is an abbrieviation for Boost Up My Post. When I was a n00b to the site, i was confused as well Basically, people use it as a spam post, in order to make more gaia "gold" ... stuff that buys your avatar clothes. It can get quite annoying, especially when there are entire threads devoted to it. Also, quotes can get really excessive, to the point of stretching the page. Does anyone know the IP adress of gaiaonline? <3 posted by Laurana |

There isn't a need to hack the servers and crash them... They are already screwed up enough to save you the trouble. Also, I don't think it would be hard to find out. I don't believe they have hardly ANY safety measures in place. I could be mistaken, but I doubt they've thought of anything with all the leaks they've got in their sinking ship. posted by Viral |

Viral: Eh, I also find it amusing that instead of working on already existing problems, they continue adding new even buggier things to it. Is that how a forum is supposed to be handled? It's a choice of the web designer. Some prefer to get every little thing working before they do anything else. Others prefer to work in stages, as GAIA does, using alphas, betas, etc.: once GAIA has gotten all of its features working, such as games etc., it will be in beta. When it reaches that point, most all of the updates done will be fixing old small errors. Some people don't think this is good coding: then again, with a project as large as GAIA online, they couldn't really develop it in private: they need the alpha to get an idea of what their userbase and tech levels are going to need to be. Basically, they're not slacking off: there's a lot of server upkeeping that needs to be done, and they're always working on things that they've had planned for years now. Even if an avatar's hair shows through a hat, it's not a major problem. posted by Nico |

Well, the point I'm making is that these are NOT all small errors. These are rather major ones. Hence the loss of EVERYTHING in an account, many missing or disabled features, and over all just the kinks in the servers. I can understand server stress, but the rest of them are things they need to take care of. Conflicts in coding arn't purdy. I haven't written a forum code, and I clap at the achievement they have made, but when it starts failing repeatedly (The entire forum has gone down roughly 3 times in the past two days for an average of 4 to 8 hours.) SOMETHING needs to be done about the existing code before trying to put in more? Don't you think so? Also, they've got a random account ban running rampant. It will just randomly ban a character, and delete everything off him. Loads of fun I tell ya. (I've not had an error yet from lack of really using any features other than the forums... Did have one incident where it rejected trades and gave me the gold from the other person AND my item back. BTW, using said gold or item would have resulted in a ban as well... That place is just ban happy... period...) posted by Viral |

Any software of sizes that large is going to begin to suffer lack of functionality from ghosts in the shell until the code is perfected. The only way to make sure the GitSs aren't there is to test: which is what this is. If you think they can write perfect code first time up, that's a little steep. Basic software engineering states that three properties are required for a system: functional properties, non-functional properties, and user requirement implementation (similar to functional properties). Basically, GAIA runs on the Evolutionary Model (see Somerville, Software Engineering 7), which is basically the structure I outlined before. Although ideally, prevention is better than the cure, in the real world, it's much harder to implement, especially in something with as many modules as GAIA, with as few coders as it has. Brook's law notwithstanding, of course. posted by Nico |

There are SEVERAL users on Gaia that are... How should I put it?... ABSOLUTELY RETARDED! Its not laziness, oh no... For some, they do it just to show how big of an arse they are... I try to use good grammar myself, but roughly half if not more Gaian's use chat speak for everything... I generally ignore and delete any messages I get from them, and ignore them in the forums, except for a flame or two... Heh. Ticks me off to no end. Also, I realize the problems are rather large when you first start out, and it takes a lot of debugging. But seriously, why keep adding new stuff until you've finished debugging the whole thing? Instead of working on what they have which is already massive, they are adding piles upon piles of MORE CODING. That just seems rather foolish to me. Developement might go slower if they took the time to get rid of the already existing bugs, but it might just work better towards the end. But I digress, I'm no coder, so what do I know? Oh and Agent... Your grammar went missing. Capitalize at the beginning of every sentence. posted by Viral |

This is what happens when you spend all of your time in the Chatterbox. Do not enter the Chatterbox if you do not like bad grammar, bump a million times threads, and "kiss if hot" threads. Let's say they make up half the population. Which is yes, bad. Excessive quotes are in the Chatterbox, and maybe sometimes in the ED. Most gaians don't go past the first page of the topic list thinggy, I forget what it's called, so then we bump so more people are attracted to the thread. If it's on page fifty-nine no one's gonna see it. And they bump for gold too even though that doesn't work. Mods, the mods always take care of the problem pretty quicky, doesn't mean that they always respond, but that's probably because they're off moving another thread. You're only a loser gaian if you use smilies like this. Repeat until page stretches vertically. =0 Yes, hangouts are useless. Some of us think that they made them to satisfy the need for an event. It also promotes cybering. Bad, bad, bad. Not that many people scream that it's perfect, lots of people like to complain. Like to complain alot. Because we are all aware when Gaia is screwed up. Which is when we flock to this forum. ( which I found while doing a spanish thing in school using google, yay) SEVERAL, who don't reside in the Chatterbox, aren't retarded. I've got nothing to say about the progamming stuff because I have no clue about it. Servers are overloaded or something? I dunno, but with 30 , 000 people online at the same time, for the Anniversary Ball, you'd think there would be problem. If someone said this before, whatever. I didn't bother to read back thirty-one pages. Are people going to reply that they have been outside of the Chatterbox and they have still seen spam? Yeah, it irks us too. ^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^__^^_^__^_^_^_^_^_^_^ Isn't that just annoying? posted by Moo Marshmallow |
