»Freedom Tower Groundbreaking«

A 20-ton slab of granite, inscribed to honor "the enduring spirit of freedom," was laid Sunday at the World Trade Center site as the cornerstone of the skyscraper replacing the destroyed towers.

The groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday officially began construction on the 1,776-foot Freedom Tower (search), designed as a twisting glass and steel tower that evokes the Statue of Liberty (search), including a 276-foot spire resembling her torch.

Gov. George E. Pataki (search) said he chose July 4 to begin rebuilding to show that the terrorists who attacked New York on Sept. 11, 2001, didn't destroy America's faith in freedom.

"How badly our enemies underestimated the resiliency of this city and the resolve of these United States," Pataki said. "In less than three years, we have more than just plans on paper -- we place here today the cornerstone, the foundation of a new tower."

They're at it again.

I admire the sentiment and can appreciate the need for such a thing. I welcome the reconstruction in defiance of those who cause such grief to the people of the U.S.A.

But Freedom Tower, Give me a break. White laugh

One again they imply that the attack on the WTC was some kind of attack on the freedom of US citizens, when it was simply an attack on the U.S.

Ironically, it's the measures taken by the U.S. Government in response to the attack, that is actually threatening the freedom of it's people.

Nice idea Thumb Up, screwed up naming. Thumb Down

So? How should they name it?

"P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Tower"?
"CIA slept Tower"?
"Bush couldn't protect us for 8 months Tower"?
"USAma Tower"?

Phoenix Tower.

Basically a good idea, but Phoenix is also the capital city of Arizona. Might be confusing.

"End of story Tower"
"Next target Tower"

Nah, we are too sarcastic here.

yes i agree, very gay name...just like those delicious freedom fries...MMMMmmm...

i think they were implying that it was a terrorist attack, trying to bring fear to people, which is what they try to do, and in turn fear restricts peoples freedom, that's where i see the coorelation...however i do see your point...

what i hate. bush does that a lot in his speech, talks on and on about freedom and liberty and blah blah. trying to pathetically inspire patriotism for US. Trying to make people see the reason for all this war. gimme a break.
