What this is saying...

...is that as we move to more web based (and consequently platform and operating system independant) applications, The Importance of Windows is reduced and Microsoft will lose it's control of the desktop market.

While this is partly true, it seems to take the viewpoint that this would be a bad thing for Microsoft. That Microsoft have slipped up in some way. As if Shocked

What Microsoft are doing is trying to get into the lower level technology, by partly redefining what the Internet is in it's own terms. The .net framework is one example of this. Their redefinition of the OSI model is another.

Sure Microsoft may be about to lose some control of the desktop, but they'd gladly give that up to have more control of the virtual infrastructure that links all those desktops.

ASP.NET is brilliant; I've been working with web development for ten years and it's really just a generation ahead of everything out there. But it's a server technology, so clients can use any kind of desktop they want.

What is the client without the servers?

Micro$haft have never..

..been one to follow rules, the internet has standards that are in place to make it a fast and efficient enviroment, M$ have constantly gone against any 'rules' set in place and just done what they like. The Xbox2 is one step closer to creating a hardware standard that rules the living room, that is their main aim, to control media we watch and listen to.
