 What would you suggest as a punishment actually? Yup I know that saying but more in the wording that "I am innocent they framed me". However, it's obviously a case when a peson is unable to admit that they have done wrong. And I am somehow sure that a person who would be able to admit such a thing would hardly ever end up in prison. As to prisond being resocialising machines... Maybe it works in other countries but in mine the statistics clearly show that youngsters who got to prison for minor offense like let's say robbing a shop will very soon return there for a more serious one. But prisons here are very different from other countries that's true... So i guess our example is not that good. posted by mymla |

 Prisons in Britain are like holiday camps, youths go in for small petty crimes and get skooled in the art of bigger crimes all while watching tv and getting three meals a day. Bloody joke! Maybe iraq had the right idea, beat the crap out of them and remove fingers for disobedience...they would all mend their ways pretty sharpish if they thought they would loose an apendage  posted by Crossfade |

if chopping fingers off would help. Ok it certainly does because if you got your hand cut off for a theft you'd think thrice before doing it. The problem with all those beautiful ideas is that in a society we live in they would create too much uproar. Need your own country to practice such things. Here in my country prisons are no holidays at all. Overpopulated, bad food, dull work, abuse by guard and other prisoners. Everybody knows that and no one wants to get there, but they are full all of the time. posted by mymla |

...our countries are eroding away and scum are taking over the world, people being murdered is no big deal any more, we hear about it all the time. What would stop people commiting crime? longer sentences? death penalty for lesser crimes? i don't know but it needs to come now cause in 10years time it will be too late. Maybe create a police force like The Judges in 2000AD? they can give a sentence of death right on the spot if they deem it right. hmmm. posted by Crossfade |

Pity but so many centuries of punishment of different type never helped. Even afterdeath punishment people are ready to face. Oh ok probably it stopped some from wrongdoing; I've read a story of a guy who said that the fear of being punished after death stopped him from raping his cousin and stabbing a guy who played a joke that had obviously little success. Hmm. Good that something can stop such freaks, but I somehow have a feeling that as he grows older, he will be less afraid of hell. Now, there is no punishment that will be able to stop anyone. Unless, of course, there comes someone and shows people with examples that hell does exist and you will burn. But even that might not impress some. I think the only way to make the situation better is to become better ourselves. Yes I know that might sound at least strange and very unreal, but any other way out? The majority of crimes are committed by low-intellect, poor, unhappy people, who express themselves and their anger at the world in such a form. Sure inventing a terrible-death punishment is a way much easier and more familiar, but whatever have been invented before never worked. Just be better, each and everyone, show to people that they can be nice and honest not because they are doomed if they are not, but because it's a better life if they are. People are good. Somewhere very deep inside, some of them, but still... Well OK, it all now sounds like a dream or an utopia, but I think that is possible. posted by mymla |

Making people feel better about themselves and giving them oportunities to get on in life are important, they will have no need to steal or murder if they have a good life, they would not want to risk throwing it down the toilet. It seems our society is concentrating too much on the cure rather than the cause. The wealth needs to be spread so everyone can have a good life and have access to education that poverty doesnt provide. The system needs to change as it's not working the world over. posted by Crossfade |

No one would mind credit cards being given out  but that wouldn't have solved the problem most probably.

If punishment MAKES criminals then that would explain why the US prisons are full and fuller. Every 140th USAnians sits in a prison. however, some people that are extremely poor even get into jail on purpose because they know they will get free meals and shelter...  *sigh* it's a sad world.

...crimes of passion are tiny compaired to the amount of petty crimes and murder over stupid hardware items. Petty crime and household robbery are commited by punks who don't have the money to buy this stuff, if they had a better life they wouldnt do it.
