Odd, I've always heard of it as "Yuri Gagarin"..

In some languages his name's translated to "Yuri" b/c of the pronunciation.

It's interesting that the name voted for as No 1 stereotype is Vladimir, the current president's name, and No 2 - Boris, the previous president's name.

Actually, according to statistics, the most popular male name in Russia is Sergey (or Seguei, however is better to write it). I don't know about girls' names...

I've read an upsetting article recently about Russian people abroad. One of the things it said was that in Turkey all Russian girls are called "Natasha"s, the type that you stand them a drink and they go with you Not again .

I thought they don't use their real names for "work".

Reminds me of Vladimir Klitschko and (his brother) Vitali Vladimirovich Klitschko

I'm surprised, none of you has mentioned Jurij Gagarin who's the 1st man in space on 12 april in 1961. His spaceship flew around the Earth in 108 minutes.

WHAT?

The question is not "What is the best russian name"

Yuri is...eh...kinda stereotype...but not that much. The only bad russian Yuri I can remember is Udo Kiers Yuri, from Red Alert II

Seems like in all James Bond movies, and other movies, the Russian Bad guy allways has a typical Russian Name.

well of course they have a typical russian name... almost all of the James Bond movies were against the Russians! lol. i chose ivan cause that's what i use when i poke fun at my russian comrades. its not all that common, but very stereotypical, i do like the name Natalia and such.
