...Ritchie Blackmore, have any of you guys heard any of the stuff he's been playing recently? I heard he's playing jazz, is it true? posted by Echelon |

Echelon: I heard he's playing jazz, is it true? Probably, guitarists love playing jazz and blues, I know cus I love playing it too. But yeah, if it's been rumored or you read it somewhere, it's probably true. Great guitarists always seem to do it a bit, Tom Morello was a renowned jazz guitarist before he played in Rage Against the Machine. But I'll do a bit of research and see exactly what Ritchies up to. For those who don't know, Ritchie Blackmoore was the guitarist for Deep Purple, the writers of Smoke on the Water, which probably has the most played guitar riff from a rock song in the world. posted by hungarian kid |

I agree with hungarian kid and guy. I started playing because of the guys on your lists. My favs would have to be Wylde, Hendrix, Page, Frampton...but the list goes on. But...what about Dimebag Darrell, he was a great guitarist...on of my favs anyways...RIP. posted by fenderplayer |

Link Wray and Dick Dale were probably the most influential rock guitarists of their time (1950's). That's my favorite era of music so I pick them. You can hear Dick Dale on the posted by holy_of_holies |

Stevie Ray Vaughn... No question. And Hendrix. Not only was Hendrix a guitar legend, but he was one of the coolest hippies, too... "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." posted by Sinstress |

Marty Friedman! Great guitarist...superd musician! Mentor to another great guitar genius, Jason Becker. Should have listen to their solo albums, will blow yor mind off. He used to be the lead guitarist of Megadeth before leaving the band to follow his own aspirations. posted by Ken_P |

My favorite guitarists from the past couple of decades are Michael Hedges and the Reverend Horton Heat. The Reverend comes to my town a lot, so I've seen him live...I would say he is the greatest rockabilly guitarist in the history of the form. Some people would say Brian Setzer, but he hasn't pushed the music forward like the Reverend has; plus Setzer is too much of a pretty pop star...rockabilly is supposted to be dirty and dangerous. The Reverend's music is tinged with metal and punk, so it's really ferocious. For an example of what I mean, check out the early song of his called "Psychobilly Freakout". I'm not tough enough to go to his shows anymore though...they seem to draw the violent moshing crowd of Tallahassee out of the woodwork. Michael Hedges also came to my town once, but I was in college and studying so hard for my lucrative literature degree (you want fries with that?
