holy_of_holies: Chuck Berry is a great guitarist! That "Johnny B. Goode" riff is probably the most popular riff in the history of guitar. but it was Marvin Berry who introduced Chuck to that sound, Marvin first heard it when Calvin Klein filled in for guitar in his band. posted by allone |

A couple more good Reverend Horton Heat instrumentals that I just downloaded from Itunes: "Duel at the Two O'Clock Bell" and "Big Sky"..."Big Sky" is from the album "Liquor in the Front" which was produced by Ministry's Al Jourgensen. Both really good. posted by holy_of_holies |

Hammett and Slash really aren't that brilliant. They're both good, but there's nothing about them that really sets them up as anything special besides the bands they were in. Both were fast, but just watch a video of Yngwie Malmsteen. And really, Kirk Hammett only really wrote the solos in Metallica, but most instrumental guitarists write better solos then he does. Really, I think James Shaffer and Brian Welch have done way more impressive things than Kirk Hammett, I can't comment too much on Slash though since I havn't heard any Velvet Revolver. posted by hungarian kid |

I want to mention three guitarists who operate or operated outside of the rock tradition: Bill Frisell ♣ of the 90's thrash-jazz band Naked City, the blues guitarist Robert Johnson ♣, and the Bahamian folk guitarist Joseph Spence ♣. I have listened to all three of these musicians since college, and they are all amazing. posted by MindSlavery Florida |

MindSlavery Florida: the blues guitarist Robert Johnson ♣, I met Robert a few years back at a blues club here in Madison...Pretty cool guy. I'd agree w/alot of the suggestions here but would definately add Buddy Guy and Luther Allison to the list. Also, I just saw a performance by the John Mayer Trio...before you laugh it off, I'd suggest you check it out. I wasn't a huge Mayer fan (placed him in that category of all the other pop-balladeers) but that guy can play. His new stuff is blues-heavy and he handles it well. posted by GP |

GP: I met Robert a few years back at a blues club here in Madison...Pretty cool guy LOL, no I'm talking about THE Robert Johnson, the most influential Delta blues artist in history, the one who died in 1938 and left behind only about 40 recordings. I remember many happy hours spent holed up in my college apartment, figure out the strange rhythms and fingerings of his songs. posted by MindSlavery Florida |

headtat: and don't forget ted nuggent Lol Patton Oswalt ♣has a good joke about him... Sorta hard to write it though. But while we're at it, what defines a 'guitar god'? I mean, is it how fast they play or because they've done something unique and inspiring or how well they carry a melody or what? Let's really scrutinize what defines brilliance in guitar. posted by hungarian kid |
