Quote: What motivates hackers? Are they upright citizens with a Spiderman-style zeal to protect the world's great companies from their own weaknesses?
Or are they sad mischief-makers bent on destroying global capitalism before it destroys freedom and squashes their own individual geekiness? ... hacking as defined by some hackers is simply about identifying gaps in a system, about learning how to pick a lock or identifying ways in which security systems at airports are vulnerable, in order to plug those gaps. It is an intellectual game. ... If a bunch of enthusiasts spot that an bomb can be smuggled through the most elaborate system of machines and screens at an airport terminal, then who is to decry it? But what about those who think differently? Why should we trust the people who set themselves up to protect us from ourselves? Hackers may say they have our or Microsoft's best interests at heart, but who elected those particular individuals as the guardians of all our interests? What do you think about hackers? In that article there are some interesting psychological remarks about their character and why they become hackers. Would you agree? posted by mymla |

There is a misunderstanding: CRACKERS are the ones who crack into Miscrosoft. HACKERS are just guys who stay up late in front of their monitors and drink a lot of Diet Coke Hackers are Computer fans. posted by knn |

tut, tut, Trying to pidgeon hole hackers based on the ideas of some pubescent "youf" and "the Dean of Business and Information Technology at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology" - bullshit bingo gone mad - boy do they shoot wide of the mark. They conclude that hackers are anti-social after advertising a hacker convention - why would anti-social people attend (never mind hold) a convention? And as to definitions; A hacker attempts to bypass protection A cracker aims to remove it protection completely There is a third term which is used to describe the majority of these self-proclaimed hackers and crackers - Lamers posted by Marl64 |

As a matter of fact, I don't mind neither hackers nor crackers. The nice guys who spend their lives in front of the monitor sipping diet coke and surfing the internet just never did me any harm. The most cusious ones do some good even - by tracking down weak point in systems. And crackers have only done good for me - here in Russia it's possible to buy any computer softwear very cheap compared to its original price due to the hackers/crackers. Of course the softwear might not have all the functions as the uncracked one, but unless you are using it as a professional (and then you can buy the authentic one) it's useful. posted by mymla |

Quote: Cracked software has some functions more Could be, never met such yet. Usually cracked softwear is impossible to update online - like Windows XP. If cracked you cannot pretend it's a licenced version, so all you can do is use what you already have. posted by mymla |

mymla: Usually cracked softwear is impossible to update online - like Windows XP. If cracked you cannot pretend it's a licenced version, so all you can do is use what you already have. This is partially true. The auto update requires validation of your XP, however (with the exception of service packs 1 to 2RC) the updates are available to download and apply locally without validation. My understanding is that SP2 when released will not limit installation based on a valid XP serial. knn: Usually it's vice versa: Cracked software has some functions more Many years ago, me and a group of friends went to a computer show in London (complete with plastic carriers full of ambiguously labelled disks While looking around we saw a stand being run by a company that produced a popular piece of software that we had had some - erm.. experience with. They were demonstrating their own software with a cracked version and when we asked why, the guy explained... "Oh it loads much faster than our original and the cracking group took out some of the bugs" - actually the cracking group took out the protection which just happened to cause some bugs. We were flattered. posted by Marl64 |

Heh, how's this for an idea - Computer games become free but have ads (I HATE ADS) but just like on Bill Boards and stuff in the game, not like little commercials between each level. Heh, honestly I think it's a shit idea. posted by hungarian kid |

We can get fined upto Rs.200000 just for sending pr0n over email. Porn is always another story. I saw this in a report about crackers. They said that each year the FBI faces a lot hacking attempt from India, because cracking US government can be part of IT education in india. And they have shown Indian computer students typing something. (( Please update your user profile, thanks )) posted by knn |
